I never really noticed my size…. until I was about 7-8 years old.
I do recall going to visit my father’s aunt “Titi Mel”. As my little greedy fingers grabbed the ladle for a second heaping-helping of “arroz con gandules” (rice and pigeon peas.) She snuck up behind me, smacked my hand and said in her broken English…
“Jew getting fat “Mami”, no more for jew.” I suspect that was the beginning of my being a fatty-over-eater.
I guess that’s when I started getting a little bit “round”, but it was never really brought to my attention, until I entered public school (I was a victim of bullying but it wasn’t in regards to my weight…but, we’ll get back to that further down the line).
Being a child of bi-racial parents, I always loved food. When it came to “Caribbean” and “Soul Food”, I had the best of both worlds. My father, with his Puerto Rican cuisine and my Mother’s Trinidadian and Southern roots endlessly created a delicious combination of treats and goodies. Rice and beans, pork chops, rice and peas, fried chicken, fried fish, curry, platanos, empanadas, stew chicken and the list goes on. Most of it starchy, greasy and always, more then one serving, all bad for you…but all welcomed in my home. However, my mother ALWAYS made sure there was something green on the table. But, that usually went…. unappreciated.
I grew up always being the thick girl but I was always active. I know it sounds like a strange combination, but it’s true. I loved to dance, so I studied ballet, jazz and modern dance at a very young age. I “flew through the air with the greatest of ease” studying trapeze and gymnastics. I even joined the swim team, taking a job as a lifeguard at age 16. I was also a cheerleader for my JV Football team.
I think this helped in keeping me toned, as I overate. But it created a strange self-awareness of my body. My body weight was well distributed so I looked “even” everywhere (well, I should say evenly “fat” everywhere and not very jiggly, just solid!) I was always fooling people when they asked how much I weighed, but really I was just fooling myself. This was my condition for years, up and down, up and down.

When I took my fifth grade class picture I stood 5’2″ and weighed in at 110 lbs. Towering over all of my classmates, boys included. Needless to say I had no enemies and was friends with everyone. I never had boyfriends or crushes, until I was allowed to date at 16. Shy and introverted, with braces and glasses I was always the “friend.”

All of this being said I have decided to start a blog about my weight and the importance of having a positive self-image. After years of yo-yoing and being unsuccessful at keeping the weight off and uncomfortable in my own skin at my highest weight of 210 lb. I’ve finally figured out what works best for me. I have lost a total of 55 lbs. through healthy eating and consistent exercise. It didn’t happen over night (it has taken me roughly 3 years to get it right) but I realize now how to tackle it… and it hasn’t been easy!

So many people have asked me how I was able to lose so much weight and transform by body into a lean and strong way so I figured what better way to offer personal advise then on my own website. I figured I can just shed a little light on my journey, different exercises I’ve learned thought out the years from numerous trainers I’ve hired, recipes, snacks, vitamins, supplements that I favor, products and shopping. By no means am I a certified trainer; I’m just someone who is speaking from experience.

I hope that by starting this blog I’m able to help some of you out there who are having a hard time finding the motivation in being a healthier you! I am not promoting anything but healthy living and healthy self body image here so if you think my goal is to be a skinny thing who cant lift more the 5 lb. with no stamina or endurance you are VERY wrong. This is purely about self-empowerment and looking within yourself for the strength to persevere and succeed in all things you have passion for.

Thanks so much for stopping by! And good luck on your self revolution, changing your destiny and fulfilling your dreams

All the best,
